Avant de mourir, il écrivit un dernier livre inachevé, un livre qu’il refusa de publier. C’étaient trois petits cahiers d’écolier qui racontaient les derniers jours d’un écrivain raté. Le style épuré allait à l’essentiel. Aucune fioriture. C’était un récit sans rature. Le personnage principal était un auteur marginal qui habitait un vieux chalet familial au bord de la mer Baltique en Finlande. Depuis la mort de sa femme, il vivait seul. Il vivait mal, empêtré dans de lointains souvenirs qu’il ressassait en écrivant. C’était comme un aller-retour dans le présent et le passé qui l’empêchait de faire son deuil. Était-ce une histoire authentique ou le fruit de son imagination ? Le romancier mourut à cinquante ans. Sur la première page du roman, on pouvait lire une épigraphe énigmatique : «Tu ne liras jamais ce livre moribond, ô ma chérie ! Tu ne sauras jamais pourquoi je l’ai écrit. »
